$5M FOR THE MATH THAT ISN’T BROKEN YET — GALAXY BANKROLLS BITCOIN’S POST-QUANTUM DEFENSE WHILE CORE FIGHTS OVER DATA LIMITS.
Galaxy Digital, Nasdaq-listed asset manager led by Mike Novogratz, launched a Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative today — up to $5M in grants to open-source developers building post-quantum signature schemes. Alex Thorn, Galaxy Head of Research, posted the details at 5:17 AM Arizona time. Jameson Lopp reposted approximately one hour later. The program has three pillars: grants for individual developers, Galaxy Research publications on quantum threat modeling, and a Quantum Advisory Council staffed by cryptographers from University of Calgary (Sanders), MIT (Bérubé), and Boston University (Tromer). Applications open immediately. The frame matters: no quantum computer breaks Bitcoin today. Galaxy is funding the work now because the migration path from ECDSA and Schnorr signatures will take years and requires activated consensus. BIP-361, coauthored by Lopp and updated Monday, describes exactly that migration. Galaxy just built the funding scaffold for the R&D that BIP-361 will need to draw on. Disclosure: Galaxy is a public asset manager with material Bitcoin exposure. If the cryptography breaks, AUM goes to zero. Funding the defense is prudent from that seat. It is also, incidentally, the right work.
